Equipment needed to move a piano
Now that you are familiar with the major factors that influence piano moving costs, let’s talk about the typical piano moving cost so that you can use that as a benchmark when comparing quotes from various professional piano moving companies. You should also know just how much it costs to move a piano nationwide. There is no doubt that the price you’ll have to pay to have your piano packed and moved by professional piano movers can differ significantly from these average values. Several factors will determine how much piano movers are going to charge you, such as the type of piano you have, the distance you move, and numerous other details.
Piano moving costs are affected by several factors
- It costs more to transport heavier and larger pianos because the movers will need more specialized equipment, more wrapping materials, and may need to disassemble the piano partially for transport.
- Moving a grand piano will cost you significantly more due to its large dimensions and unique shape, making it difficult to maneuver around the home on the way to the moving truck.
- For a more accurate piano moving cost estimate, you should know the precise dimensions of your musical instrument. Take the measuring tape and get to work.
- You must measure the height from the floor to the lid of an upright piano. Knowing the piano’s length from the bow to the keyboard end is essential when determining the length of a grand piano. Concert grand pianos can measure up to 7 feet in length while baby grand pianos are generally 6 to 7 feet long.
- The simplest way to find out how much professional piano movers will charge to move your large instrument is to tell them the make and model of your large instrument.
- Once the piano movers have all of that information, they’ll be able to provide you with a much more accurate piano moving estimate, and you won’t have to deal with any unpleasant surprises after the move is complete.
- Pianos cost more to move across the country when their distance from their final destination has to be taken into account. When it comes to price, there’s a huge difference between moving your piano across town, within the same state (intrastate moving), or across several states to another state (interstate moving).
- As a general rule, the greater the distance, the higher the piano moving cost. Moving your piano 30 miles, 300 miles, or 3,000 miles will cost very different amounts (time, fuel, wear, and tear, etc.).
- Keep in mind that many types of obstacles that your piano movers will have to overcome on the day of the move will increase the piano moving cost, sometimes by a lot. This is normal as your hired men will need to invest more effort and time to take the huge musical instrument out of your home.
What factors are considered in calculating piano shipping costs?
Hourly rate: Piano movers sometimes charge their clients an hourly rate for their services. When the piano moving cost is estimated on an hourly basis, the following factors will determine the final price:
- The number of movers required to complete the job;
- The time it takes to move the piano from point A to point B;
- Piano moving equipment used in the process’
- Amount of the travel fee.
Most piano movers that charge an hourly rate (for local moves), will charge a minimum of three hours of labor – the time it takes them to pack a piano, move it to the moving truck, reload it on the moving truck and deliver it safely to the new residence.
All piano moving services are going to cost more if you require additional services. We’ve compiled a list of extra services that may increase the piano moving price.
- Partial disassembly: To move out of the house safely, a grand piano may need to be partially disassembled. Professional piano movers usually charge around $100 to remove the piano’s leg, pedal box, and music rack.
- Crating: An extremely valuable piano should be protected perfectly for the upcoming move. The safest way to move a priceless piano is in a wooden crate. Prices for piano crating start at $800 and can easily reach $1,000.
- Hoisting: In the case of narrow hallways, doors, or stairs, your piano may need to be hoisted through a window or a balcony using special hoisting equipment. You can expect to pay between $700 and $1,000 for that specific service.
- Emergency moving: You will most likely have to pay double the regular piano moving price if you move your piano in an emergency. For a last-minute piano move, you can expect an additional fee of $300 for local moves and $400-$600 for long-distance moves.
- Insurance: Piano movers should provide you with adequate insurance up to $5,000 for free. You can expect to pay roughly $15 per $1,000 of value for additional insurance.
- Re-tuning: A re-tuning of your piano is usually needed after you move because your piano will be vibrated and shook during the move. Also, your new home’s climate (especially humidity) may require professional re-tuning. You can expect to be charged between $100 and $150 for the piano service after moving
